Bacopa monnieri: benefits, dosage and side effects

In short: bacopa (Bacopa monnieri), called brahmi in India, is a small plant of wet areas used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. It is one of the most studied plants for memory. A meta-analysis of controlled trials observed better results on some memory tests and on reaction time after about 12 weeks. So bacopa does not work instantly. The studied dose is about 300 mg per day of an extract standardised for bacosides. Side effects are mainly digestive: best taken with a meal.

What is bacopa?

Bacopa monnieri is a creeping plant with small white flowers that grows in wet areas of India, South-East Asia and Australia. Its most studied compounds are bacosides, a type of saponin. Good-quality extracts are standardised for bacosides (often 20 to 55% depending on the measurement method).

What do studies say about bacopa?

StudyParticipantsWhat was observed
Stough et al., 2001 (Psychopharmacology)46 healthy adults, 12 weeksWith 300 mg of extract per day: faster processing of visual information and better learning rate than placebo. No difference at 5 weeks.
Kongkeaw et al., 2014 (Journal of Ethnopharmacology)Meta-analysis of 9 controlled trials, 518 participantsImprovement on some memory tests (free recall) and on reaction time. The authors call for larger studies.

Key takeaway: bacopa is one of the best-studied plants for memory, but the effects are modest, measured on specific tests and take several weeks. No health claim is authorised for bacopa in Switzerland or the EU.

Bacopa dosage

  • Studied dose: about 300 mg of standardised extract per day (sometimes 300 to 450 mg).
  • Timing: with a meal to avoid digestive discomfort. Some prefer the evening, as bacopa can feel relaxing.
  • Duration: 8 to 12 weeks before judging.

Side effects and precautions

Bacopa is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects in studies are digestive: nausea, cramps, loose stools. As a precaution:

  • take it with a meal;
  • ask your doctor during pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  • talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you take medication, especially for the thyroid, or sedatives.

Bacopa in Pure Focus

Our Pure Focus formula contains 200 mg of Bacopa monnieri per daily dose, combined with 1,000 mg of Lion's Mane, citicoline, L-theanine, rhodiola, ginkgo and vitamins B6, B9 and B12. That is a little less than the 300 mg used in most studies: we chose to combine several ingredients rather than concentrate the formula on a single one. The B vitamins contribute to normal psychological function and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
